Spend 5 – Simon Cecere

Quit your day job, pick up a camera, establish yourself as one of Adelaide’s most trusted fashion photographers then drop everything and move to Europe to start all over again in one of the toughest markets in the world. Show the street style set of Paris and Milan what South Australian talent is made of. Meet Simon Cecere, the Adelaide photographer who is doing just that. If his Instagram account hasn’t given you a serious case of wanderlust or made you want to invest in an Off_White piece as of late, little else will.

Known for taking a designer’s ethos and vision and bringing it to life one delicious frame at a time, Simon has long been the right hand man of some of South Australia’s most renowned brands. From Paolo Sebastian to CLIQUE Magazine, he has shot for many of the names we lust over.

With Simon’s work currently sprawled across the Art Gallery of SA entrance ahead of the Paolo Sebastian: X the unveiling, we thought there was no better time to Spend 5 with the man himself and hear all about his Parisian adventures. I mean he has been a long-standing AFF family member after all….

Name: Simon Cecere

Hometown: Adelaide

Current town: Paris

I moved here because: Everywhere you look is a picture

So far I can say life is… colourful and interesting

Background music as I type this: Todd Terje

Ensemble situation (what are you wearing): AMH T-shirt, Carhartt pants and Adidas by Raf Simons sneakers.

Liquor of choice: Vodka

But if it has to be a wine, it’s: A good Savignon Blanc

On Paris:

The fashion is: Effortless, cool and chic

The people are: Diverse, resilient and friendly (and sometimes difficult 🙂 )

Inspiration can be found in: Almost everywhere in Paris

For people watching I go to: Metro stations

For a good coffee: Foundation (They’re aussies!)

When an Aussie visits I take them to: Restaurant 52, Colette (but it’s closing sadly 🙁 )

My Parisian muse is: Currently Jeanne Damas

When in Paris, you will find me: Behind a camera

On Milan:

Street style is all about: Relaxed oversized silhouettes with a statement shoe or a cool sneaker for a more casual look.

Inspiration comes from: Galleries. You can find good exhibitions in Milan.

The labels to watch: Marios and Annakiki

Post work haunt: 10 Corso Como

Where all the cool kids hang: Potafiori, Brera, Navigli

My Italian muse is: Chiara Totire

When I have a visitor, I always take them to: Navigli for aperitivo

On photography:

It all started when: I got the itch 7 years ago

I moved to Europe for work because: I wanted to grow creatively and find depth in art and fashion.

Working here is: Challenging and rewarding at the same time

I would love to photograph: Every interesting person I see!

My favourite photo captured in Paris and why: A photo I took on the metro. It’s my favorite because I feel it captures the curiosity of the Parisian underground.

My favourite photo captured in Milan and why: Probably the shot I took of Christine Centenera at the Armani Show. You only see a shoe, her invite and what she’s wearing but in her movement there is a sense of confidence and certainty. I find it interesting.

Final notes

The first thing I do when I wake up: Meditate.

The last thing I do before I go to bed: Meditate.

Life motto: Learn to love yourself
