As we announce the exciting release of a third Paolo Sebastian runway presented by Mercedes-Benz Adelaide & Unley, we wanted to take a look at the making of his beautiful collection The Nutcracker.
Designer Paul Vasileff imagined the collection in late 2017 when he stumbled upon the perfect gift.
“The inspiration behind this collection, funnily enough, came during the Christmas break last year,” says Vasileff.
“I bought a storybook for my Goddaughter which was a Tchaikovsky musical book and when the Sugarplum Fairy began to play I had all these ideas come to mind and started designing almost immediately.
“The iconic chords provided me with the most inspiration.
“When I listened to the music, I began to imagine the models walking down the runway and could envision how they were dressed head to toe, colour palette and all.”
So, Paul started sketching.
And after perfecting the concepts, his ideas became a reality as his team worked tirelessly to pull together an inimitable 26 piece Autumn/Winter collection.
No doubt countless hours went into planning, sketching, creating calico bases and choosing the perfect fabrics.
Then came the finer details; the hand-drawn and sewn embroidery on the garments, the beading, the finishing… Not a stitch was left unfinished.
It was in June this year that Paul and his team took the finished collection to Paris where they showcased at Artcurial on des Champs-Élysées to coincide with Haute Couture Fashion Week.
He announced that this would be the collection he would also show at the 2018 Adelaide Fashion Festival presented by Mercedes-Benz Adelaide & Unley.
But this year, he would step away from the traditional runway set up to create a truly spectacular show unlike anything we’ve ever seen.
At all three runways, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will be performing tracks from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker live.
“I’m really excited to show everyone what we have in store for this year’s runway show,” he says.
“When I first approached AFF and the ASO with the idea of a live orchestra, I was almost certain that the answer would be no, so you can imagine how surprised I was when everyone wanted to be a part of bringing this vision to life.”
The first two runways launched in early July to massive success – they sold out within just weeks of going live.
And so a third runway was added to the AFF18 line up!
Paul says this news is fantastic for him and the team.
“I’m really excited that there will be a third Paolo Sebastian show at this year’s Adelaide Fashion Festival,” he says.
“It is an incredible feeling to know that there is so much support behind this collection and the brand, and that so many people want to attend our show.”
